The same folks who fabricate all those carbon fiber parts also make stuff for the motorsports and aircraft industries. While its good to have strong, lightweight components, I also wonder whether there is "over engineering" in bicycles, which is perhaps needlessly bumping costs up.Ronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16268869622833968439noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13887692.post-26224145830174649182008-09-03T17:09:00.000-04:002008-09-03T17:09:00.000-04:00Great post!! It reminds me of some crack propagation calculations I saw for jet engine parts when was working for Pratt & Whitney as a contractor a couple of years back when I was just out of school. It's the same stuff that keeps oil rigs running and jet engines flying that keeps your bike from suddenly fracturing under you.

I only found your blog recently, but I really enjoy reading it - especially the technical stuff. Keep up the good work!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13887692.post-88308213450488636862008-09-02T20:47:00.000-04:002008-09-02T20:47:00.000-04:00That's cool stuff ron.-BThat's cool stuff ron.

-BBluenoserhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03448920726947078281noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13887692.post-71105989386770784102008-09-02T08:44:00.000-04:002008-09-02T08:44:00.000-04:00Unreal... where do you find this stuff? Oh that's...Unreal... where do you find this stuff? Oh that's right ... you study this material. But it's great insight for us to see what goes into our bikes.
