Turing was indeed a unique individual who brings into high contrast the capabilities of human potential that lie within all of us.

Did you know that there are actual examples of the Enigma encryptor machine and also the Bombe decryptor machine at the National Cryptologic Museum in Fort Meade, Maryland? It's a tiny little museum, adjacent to the NSA, but highly recommended if you can find the time to visit.

The Enigma is about the size of a medium sized valise. The Bombe is about the size of a medium to large truck. Gives one pause to consider the mathematics of encryption vs. decryption.

See: http://www.nsa.gov/about/cryptologic_heritage/museum/

Also, see my blog post about another brilliant mathematician / bicyclist: http://practicalcyclist.blogspot.com/2008/06/einstein-and-bicycles.html

Cheers, RobertRobert Andersonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02881066383294557792noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13887692.post-1603445312682239702009-09-06T08:40:40.283-04:002009-09-06T08:40:40.283-04:00A really interesting post Ron. One of my all time favourite books is Neal Stephenson's 1999 novel Cryptonomicon, published by Random House. The fictional book contains quite a degree of information about Alan Turing. I can't vouch for the accuracy of it, but it does relate the bicycle story and his involvement in Bletchley Park.Bjornnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13887692.post-27131346946216997402009-09-03T18:23:56.931-04:002009-09-03T18:23:56.931-04:00Turing's analysis of his chainsuck problem is ...Turing's analysis of his chainsuck problem is very reminiscent of jokes about mathematicians :-)

Fascinating article.Yokota Fritzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04808661100114872654noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13887692.post-62977663186670319692009-09-03T16:18:18.670-04:002009-09-03T16:18:18.670-04:00Have you seen the Race Across the Sky trailer yet?...Have you seen the Race Across the Sky trailer yet? I really admire Turing and still feel sad/outrage at his torments for being "degenerate".

For those curious, Turing also developed the first computer program that could play chess. Since there were no computers that could perform these operations, the algorithm was solved on paper and each move took 1/2 hour.

Thanks again!Rodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08909447364964331090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13887692.post-59942953951024063852009-09-02T15:02:10.646-04:002009-09-02T15:02:10.646-04:00Thank you sir. The irony is also in the fact that the people he had saved from the war ended up tormenting him, which was to blame to his demise. Basically they were responsible for destroying our national treasure. The Government should start recognizing what they did and own up to past mistakes if they're truly democratic by today's standards.sillypuddynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13887692.post-78400993002281909282009-09-02T14:51:45.265-04:002009-09-02T14:51:45.265-04:00Note : I attached the pic to the post. I did some sleuthing around myself and landed upon a Channel 4 news segment on Youtube that shows a green vintage bicycle with a gas mask hanging from its handlebars. They showed the bike right when they started talking about his bicycle riding habits. Whether it was shown just for illustration or whether it was the actual bike I don't know. I want to err on the side of caution as its likely his bicycle and gas mask would be placed more in a museum, of all other places.

Link : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oT8HYGFwspM&feature=relatedRon Georgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18394865788996482667noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13887692.post-71262774401340472952009-09-02T14:44:25.657-04:002009-09-02T14:44:25.657-04:00Its very sad he had to die the way he did.
