He's brilliant, a bit eccentric, impatient, and he's definitely not a prick the way I would define the term.raykeenernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13887692.post-14544877040577506192010-03-14T13:24:45.264-04:002010-03-14T13:24:45.264-04:00Jobst has a declarative and authoritative writing ...Jobst has a declarative and authoritative writing style with little compunction about telling people they are full of crap, so he's ruffled a few feathers over the years. I think there are a lot of people who have felt very stung by that and have nursed a grudge against him, perhaps even seeing him as malicious towards them, and waste no opportunity to attack him.

From Jobst's writing, he seems to interpret this as people being mad
that he's shot their sacred cows but I think it's more personal than
that for his antagonists. I think that at least some of them have felt hurt and perhaps even publicly humiliated, even if that was not Jobst's intent, and react towards him from that basis.Tim McNamarahttp://groups.google.com/group/rec.bicycles.tech/browse_thread/thread/5c16fe415dacce61/5700ca11ecfcef98?lnk=raot#5700ca11ecfcef98noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13887692.post-55574355755351451822010-03-14T13:15:32.295-04:002010-03-14T13:15:32.295-04:00When I joined the discussions at rec.bicycles.tech...When I joined the discussions at rec.bicycles.tech about 16 years ago, I had a lot of practical experience with bikes from years of riding them, fixing them and working in bike shops.

One of the first things I did was run afoul of Jobst- I can no longer remember the topic but it was probably about wheels. When I checked out what he said, however, it was clear that he was right and my understanding had been wrong. That taught me to pay attention.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13887692.post-17891167989258123332010-03-14T01:10:48.567-05:002010-03-14T01:10:48.567-05:00MWT : If you're Mark Trimble, I tracked your s...MWT : If you're Mark Trimble, I tracked your supposedly concerning discussion with Jobst on rec.bicycles.racing. The topic was "Italian national team colors" posted on Feb 15, 2001. Your exact question to the newsgroup was as follows :

"Why does the Italian national team traditionally wear azure blue jerseys rather than some variation of their flag and/or its colors?"

To which Jobst Brandt replied as such :

"Because they have class. You probably expect some gaudy display of nationalism? Italian national colors are not unique to Italy, Mexico, Hungary,... On the other hand, I wouldn't mind seeing more solid colors on teams these days, instead of the common auto parts sticker, stock car displays that jerseys emulate today.

Maybe we can get them to wear basketball uniforms with baggy pants and shirts. The cycling shorts are already down to the knees. Who writes these fashions? "

Source : Rec.bicycles.racing

No where in there did Jobst mention the word ugly neon nor did he accuse you of wanting the Italian national team to dress up like that.

This was also not "ballistic" in any way. It was a "snap", but not ballistic. The blog is always democratic in that I don't discourage or ignore negative comments. If I want someone to keep reading the material I post here, I must also take some heed to what readers are telling me. Which is why I want to get this clarified with Jobst, as a side thing. That won't affect the series of interviews though, and I will have the next installment on Monday. I think we all are eager to hear on what Jobst did at Porche or what his adventures were like in the Alps.Ron Georgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18394865788996482667noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13887692.post-23170157861697520582010-03-13T21:08:08.558-05:002010-03-13T21:08:08.558-05:00Andre -

I understand some people have been upset with his online attitude to posters, when tey weren't even challenging material from his book. We'll see what he has to say." Why? Who cares what Jobst thinks of these clowns, or how he treats mickey mouse kibitzers, or his peers for that matter? It isn't your business to bring all the petty concerns of the little nobodies to Jobst's attention. You have here an opportunity to interview an engineer of immense breadth of high-level achievement, and you're wasting it on pointing out what he knows already, that he doesn't handle worthless time-wasters tenderly! No one can say I'm Jobst's bumbuddy, but I'm really very keen to hear about his time at Porsche, and as a bicycle component designer, and as an Alpine pass cyclist, rather than wasting time on this crap. Hell, if you have to waste your and Jobst's and everyone's time with petty street myths, ask Jobst about the "Death Ride" over the Sierras... -- Andre JuteAndre Jutenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13887692.post-58445843942040243522010-03-13T18:45:21.115-05:002010-03-13T18:45:21.115-05:00I'm asking Jobst about all the concerns you po...I'm asking Jobst about all the concerns you post. Sheldon Brown may not have been a Stanford-trained engineer, but he was knowledgeable AND nice (and funny).

Here's the story of my online incident with Brandt. Years ago I asked on rec.bicycles.racing why the Italian national team wore azure blue. He went ballistic and accused me of wanting to see bike racers in ugly neon jerseys. Of course, I wanted no such thing but that didn't stop him from jumping to ridiculous conclusions about me.MWThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08273567055553917082noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13887692.post-67581459973206015722010-03-12T17:17:50.328-05:002010-03-12T17:17:50.328-05:00"negative tension" is usually called &qu..."negative tension" is usually called "compression" by anyone capable of drawing a FBD.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13887692.post-43764082796339615992010-03-12T16:15:33.469-05:002010-03-12T16:15:33.469-05:00Go ahead, Ron, ask Jobst about helmets. Some poor guy (not me, I assure you) asked the group (n.b., the group at large, not Brandt in the specific)about solving a problem with a creaking crankset.
